P5 Rate Quick Notes
Rate compares one quantity per one unit of another (e.g. $ per hour, litres per minute). P5 covers rate only β speed is P6-and-above territory, and PSLE 2027 removes speed entirely.
β±οΈ
1
Three Quantities
Rate = Total Γ· Number of units. Total = Rate Γ Number. Number = Total Γ· Rate.
2
Same Units
Match the units. If the rate is 'per hour', time must be in hours.
3
Rate is NOT Speed
P5 rate is about $/hour, litres/minute, pages/day. No distance-time speed at P5.
β οΈ Common Mistakes
Don't fall into these traps
- βMixing minutes with 'per hour' rate
- βConfusing rate with ratio
- βTreating rate questions as speed questions
Teacher Hidayah's Tip
π‘
Write the rate as a fraction with units: e.g. $12 / 1 hour. It removes confusion.
