P5 Rate Quick Notes

Rate compares one quantity per one unit of another (e.g. $ per hour, litres per minute). P5 covers rate only β€” speed is P6-and-above territory, and PSLE 2027 removes speed entirely.

1

Three Quantities

Rate = Total Γ· Number of units. Total = Rate Γ— Number. Number = Total Γ· Rate.

2

Same Units

Match the units. If the rate is 'per hour', time must be in hours.

3

Rate is NOT Speed

P5 rate is about $/hour, litres/minute, pages/day. No distance-time speed at P5.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Don't fall into these traps

  • βœ•Mixing minutes with 'per hour' rate
  • βœ•Confusing rate with ratio
  • βœ•Treating rate questions as speed questions
Teacher Hidayah's Tip
πŸ’‘

Write the rate as a fraction with units: e.g. $12 / 1 hour. It removes confusion.
